July 16, 2004 Mr. Rick Santorum Dear Mr. Santorum: Are you gay? I ask because that is the only explanation I can come up with for the bizarre statements you made on the floor of the senate July 13 and 14, 2004, regarding a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage. As I listened to your comments it occurred to me that perhaps your fervency was a reflection of your inner turmoil regarding your own sexuality. For if marriage is so great and the loss of it so severe, indeed the end of civilization, as you say, then it seems to me you should be in favor of gay marriage not against it. I always thought that men and their terrible wars would be the end of civilization. Who knew it would be acts of love all across this country from San Francisco to Multnomah County, Oregon, to Massachusetts, that would bring civilization down. I never knew gays had so much power. Sincerely, Michelle Brodie |
