On Friday, we hiked to Gaylor Lakes after a late start in the morning. We had pitched our tent and midnight, Thursday night, after listening to Charles Dickens' David Copperfield on the drive up to Tuolumne Meadows. Saturday was spent hiking 17 miles round trip - almost to Donahue Pass. This hike was flat most of the way, which meant sore feet and thigh cramps by the end of the day. The scenery was spectacular though, and we vowed to return to do the full 22 miles to Donahue Pass and back some day. Sunday held the sighting of a baby bear, a first for Susan and a very sweet first time encounter at that. Ten lakes is a 2400 foot elevation change, which can be challenging especially right after lunch even in only 80 degree heat. The views from the top of the summit are incredible and the lakes are stunning. It was well worth the uphill battle. |
